God’s Mercy Is More

March 6th is Ash Wednesday. This is the day when Christians spend 40 days reflecting on the meaning of the cross. Ash Wednesday is a reminder that we cannot return to Eden the same way our first parents departed. That bridge has been burned so to speak. Deep within the hearts of men, women, and children all throughout the world is the desire to experience the perfection and the wholeness that was in Eden.

In Luke 18:9-14, Jesus tells a parable about a pharisee & a tax collector. Both men went to the temple to pray. The pharisee in astounding arrogance does not see the wretchedness of his sin when he prays. The tax collector on the other hand cannot help but see the wretchedness of his sin as he beats his chest with his fist asking God to be merciful to him. Ash Wednesday reminds us all of an astounding reality. Our sins are many, but God’s mercy is more. His mercy is greater than all the sin of all of our lives combined. Ash Wednesday reminds us God’s mercy is more. Let us remember God’s mercy is more this lenten season.
