Seasons under God’s Gracious Rule

There is something about the weather that can make our days feel more pleasant. The sun feels warmer, and the sky looks bluer. The opposite is also true as well. There is something about inclement weather that reminds us how vulnerable our lives are. When bad weather is coming our way, we are more diligent to prepare for the storm. We make sure we have enough fire wood for our wood burning stoves or we make sure we have enough propane to keep our furnaces running. In either case, we are diligent to make preparations because our lives are vulnerable.

I am reminded of Genesis 1:14 where God creates the sun, moon and the stars “as signs to mark seasons and days and years.” We normally think of seasons as being beautiful in their own right whether it is seeing field after field filled with crops or seeing the ground covered in snow. One of the emphases of Genesis 1 is that the seasons are part of the pattern of God’s gracious ordering of life. Life on earth is not random but it is gracious and it is ordered under the rule our gracious Lord. When the temperatures drop, remember that this too is under God’s rule.
