I have been thinking about discipleship recently. To be a disciple means to be a follower of Jesus. It is my conviction that discipleship is the heart of the church’s mission. In Matthew 28:18-20, we find Jesus giving his last command to his disciples. Grammatically, the only command in these verses is “make disciples.” Jesus answers how Christians do this, by baptizing and teaching.

We often interpret these verses as related primarily to overseas missions. We must recognize that overseas missions is not the only application of these verses. Christians in every local church around the world throughout all the ages are to make disciples. This is God’s method of kingdom growth.

You may be saying to yourself that you do not feel qualified. There is only one qualification required: to be a Christian. If you have spent time with Jesus, then you are qualified. Discipleship is simply asking someone to imitate you as you follow Jesus. One way to do this is to get together with another person every other week, read a passage of Scripture, and pray for each other. This is simple & frightening at the same time. Take heart, the Lord Jesus has promised he will be with us until the very end of the age.
