In James 5:8, we read these words, “You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.” The difficulty with patience is that we know we should practice it, but it is so hard to do. One reason patience is hard is because we are used to doing things quickly from instant meals in microwave ovens to binge-watching entire seasons of television shows on Netflix.

When we come to the Bible, we find that God is patient, that is slow to become angry (cf. Exod. 34:6; Num. 14:18; Jonah 4:2 et al.). When the Bible uses the phrase “slow to anger” to describe God, it frequently comes after a significant failure. God is slow to anger after the Golden Calf incident, after the failure of the spies to take the land and after Jonah’s failure to show Nineveh compassion. At moments when we are least likely to be patient, God is patient.

If we attempt to be patient in our own strength, we will fail. But Jesus the ever patient one endured the cross. He endured in faithfulness until the end. He did not have to bear the scorn of the cross or the weight of our sin, but yet he patiently endured hostility so that we would not grow weary. Are you weary? Look to Jesus the patient one! Let Jesus strengthen you.
